September is Suicide Prevention Month. What is the connection between human trafficking and suicide?

Human trafficking survivors experience high rates of suicidal ideation, with one study reporting that nearly 40% of survivors had attempted to commit suicide at some point. Why?

Human trafficking involves severe abuse, including physical, sexual, and psychological violence. As a result of this trauma, survivors are at high risk for a range of mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Even after escaping exploitation, many survivors remain vulnerable—carrying heavy feelings of guilt and shame while also facing challenges like poverty, homelessness, and stigma.

So what can we do?

Survivors need spaces to feel free from their shame and guilt. They need extensive post-trafficking care to ensure their transition back into society. Places like Esthers Rising’s restorative care home can help bridge the gap for survivors and get them the mental health care they need.
